This is looking like the AI story of 2026. (Perhaps even more so than – but closely tied in with – the pushback on data centers.)
All of a sudden, real concerns about the existential harms AI may be capable of have been stealing the headlines. Recent high-level resignations from Anthropic (coming with dark warnings), multiple stories on this topic on the same day in the NYT, prominent appearances by Jacob Coxon and Dario Amodei on Anderson Cooper, have all led to a hockey-stick curve in the Existential Dread Index – closely related to P(doom) – even when compared to just a month ago when Colorado AI News addressed the initial OpenAI/Hugging Face breach.
That breach felt like it had the potential to be the pebble that started the rockslide. And that's increasingly appearing to be the case.
What was once a brouhaha has now become an uproar.
Happily, we're not at the fiasco stage. (Yet.)
